Description

Cornelian Bay lies just north of the Queen’s Domain, in Hobart. The shore is lined with colourful boathouses, and the bay offers safe anchorage for yachts.

Tasmanian Aboriginal people of the Mouheneenner band lived by the River Derwent in the Cornelian Bay area for 8000 years. Remnants of their shell middens can still be seen in the area.

The name Cornelian Bay derives from semi -precious cornelian stones identified on the beach by John Hayes in 1792.

After the establishment of the colonial settlement at Sullivans Cove (modern Hobart waterfront) in 1804, the area became the Government Farm, supplying fresh vegetables and other produce for the first residents of Hobart Town.
